How do I leave negative feedback on eBay for a buyer?
Protecting the Seller’s Reputation Sellers aren’t able to leave negative or neutral Feedback for buyers. That means sellers need other tools that will protect them against unfair treatment from buyers and bring those buyers to eBay’s attention. Here are some ways sellers and eBay are working together to protect sellers’ reputations and promote a fair marketplace:
Sellers can add buyer requirements to their listings to prevent unwanted bidders You can block buyers with too many policy violations, unpaid items, or who aren’t registered with PayPal. This can help you dramatically reduce your number of unpaid items. To access this tool, go to My eBay > Account > Site Preferences > Buyer requirements. Sellers can require buyers to pay right away If you use Buy It Now, you can require buyers to pay you immediately using PayPal. Sellers have an easy way to report problems with buyers Sellers can use the seller reporting hub to report an unpaid item, Feedback extortion, or any other problem with a buyer. eBay investigates all reports and will remove any negative or neutral Feedback that’s in violation of eBay policy. We provide enhanced Feedback protection for unpaid items In addition to removing Feedback left by buyers who don’t respond to an unpaid item report, we also remove negative and neutral Feedback when there is a response but it’s clear that the buyer didn’t intend to complete the transaction (for example, if they bought the item elsewhere or had a family emergency). We proactively look for Feedback abuse and take action against it For example, eBay investigates buyers who leave positive Feedback but low Detailed Seller Ratings. We remove Feedback from suspended buyers Buyers who are suspended for Unpaid Items or other policy violations aren’t allowed to leave negative or neutral Feedback. We remove all neutral or negative Feedback left by suspended buyers so it won’t negatively affect sellers’ reputations. We educate buyers For example, if there are problems with a purchase, we ask the buyer to contact the seller directly to try to work things out before leaving Feedback.
Can you leave feedback on eBay without buying?
Can I buy eBay feedback? – You don’t have to look very hard to find people offering to post positive eBay feedback for you, usually on freelancing sites like Fiverr and People Per Hour. For example, the freelancer below is offering 500 eBay watchers for £15 (about $20), in an attempt to game eBay’s search algorithm. You can’t receive feedback on eBay without first making a sale. But making a sale means receiving payment, shipping orders, and paying fees. So, fake feedback services like this normally work by accepting alternative payment methods on your listings (such as cash on collection), so you can mark orders as paid and shipped without actually having to receive payment.
The freelancer will often use the “Make An Offer” facility so they can make very low offers which you then accept, to minimize your eBay fees. They will use different eBay accounts and wait a few days before leaving feedback, to make it appear that the transaction is genuine and normal. Unsurprisingly, buying fake positive feedback is forbidden under eBay’s feedback manipulation policy,
The typical pattern of fake feedback, as detailed above, is quite easy to detect. If you are caught, it will be very clear that you intended to deceive eBay and eBay buyers, so you should expect to have your seller account suspended, perhaps permanently.
Why can’t I leave bad feedback on eBay?
Only registered eBay members can leave feedback. If you bought an item as a guest, you won’t be able to leave feedback about your experience.
Should a seller leave feedback on eBay?Frequently asked questions about Feedback
- When should I leave Feedback?
- What should I consider before rating a seller’s performance?
- Why are buyers who receive unpaid item strikes allowed to leave Feedback?
- Why are sellers allowed to leave only positive Feedback for buyers?
- What should I do if I have a problem with a buyer?
- How do I protect myself from buyers who don’t follow eBay policies, and what is eBay doing to protect me?
- Now that Mutual Feedback Withdrawal no longer exists, is it still possible for buyers to change or withdraw their Feedback?
- I received unfair Feedback. Will you remove it?
- When should I leave Feedback? Buyers and sellers should leave Feedback within 60 days after the listing ends.
- Sellers are encouraged to leave Feedback as soon as payment is received (or has cleared). That will start the Feedback process off on a good note.
- Buyers should wait to leave Feedback for sellers until after they receive the item. If the item doesn’t arrive, the buyer should double-check the shipping time in the item description and contact the seller if the package is clearly late. If the seller sent a tracking number, the buyer should check with the carrier to see when the item should arrive. It’s important to take these steps before leaving Feedback.
- What should I consider before rating a seller’s performance? In general, here’s what you should be thinking about when leaving Feedback for a seller:
- Did you get what you were expecting, based on the item description?
- Was the item packaged appropriately (to prevent damage during shipping)?
- Did the seller ship the item within the timeframe indicated in the listing? (Remember that international shipments may be subject to additional delays.)
- Were the shipping and handling costs reasonable?
- If you communicated with the seller, were your questions or concerns addressed? Did the seller respond within a reasonable amount of time?
- Why are buyers who receive unpaid item strikes allowed to leave Feedback? Because we don’t know when a buyer has actually paid, buyers are allowed to continue using eBay as they normally would, and that includes leaving Feedback. However, eBay will remove any neutral or negative Feedback left by the buyer in any of these cases:
- The buyer doesn’t respond to the unpaid item process.
- The response indicates that the buyer isn’t following eBay guidelines (for example, the buyer ended up purchasing the item somewhere else).
- The buyer ends up getting suspended for the unpaid item or a different policy violation.
- Why are sellers allowed to leave only positive Feedback for buyers? Sellers used to be able to leave negative Feedback for buyers. Unfortunately, we found that when buyers had bad experiences with sellers, they were often reluctant to leave neutral or negative Feedback out of fear that the seller would retaliate by leaving negative Feedback for them. And when buyers did receive unfair negative Feedback, they usually decreased their shopping on eBay. Overall, it became clear that the fear of retaliatory negative Feedback made it more difficult for good sellers to distinguish themselves from not-so-good sellers, and made the Feedback system as a whole less reliable.
- What should I do if I have a problem with a buyer? If you experience a problem with a buyer please report it to us using the seller reporting hub and we’ll follow up.
- How do I protect myself from buyers who don’t follow eBay policies, and what is eBay doing to protect me? Specifying what types of buyers are allowed to purchase from you can be effective protection, so we encourage sellers to add buyer requirements to their listings. If you use Buy It Now, you can also require buyers to pay immediately using PayPal. eBay is proactively educating buyers and taking action in cases of Feedback abuse. We also provide enhanced Feedback protection for unpaid items. See what else eBay is doing to protect sellers,
- How that Mutual Feedback Withdrawal no longer exists, is it still possible for buyers to change or withdraw their Feedback? Yes. Buyers can revise Feedback they’ve left for sellers in the case of a mistake. Unlike Mutual Feedback Withdrawal, buyers will be able to change the actual comment itself, not just withdraw the rating.
- I received unfair Feedback. Will you remove it? eBay will remove Feedback ratings and comments in certain limited situations. Please see the Feedback Withdrawal and Removal page to review the guidelines for Feedback removal. If the Feedback you were left meets the guidelines, please report it to us,

Can I ask buyer to remove negative feedback?
How to Ask a Customer to Remove a Negative Review or Negative Feedback – Did you know that four out of five consumers change their mind about buying a product or using a service after reading a negative review about it? This is a game-changing statistic for both big and small businesses,
Negative reviews can drive a lot of change in customer interactions—and not necessarily the good kind. Negative online reviews can not only hurt you financially through the form of reduced sales; they can also cause tension or stress in having to deal with a dissatisfied, sometimes even unpleasant, customer.
How can your business minimize the damage done by negative or even neutral feedback left on online review sites? The answer is simple: The best thing your business can do is directly (and politely ) ask the customer to remove or update their feedback.
- Contact your unhappy customer and be personable.
- Use their first name and apologize as necessary.
- You might ask them what went wrong and why they were so dissatisfied with the service provided.
- Collect insight into their poor customer experience, empathize, and make them feel heard.
- Your business’s diligence and extra step to right a wrong may change the customer’s opinion and review.
Take advantage of the customers that are willing to engage with you. Assure them that it won’t happen again and politely ask them to update their negative feedback after doing so. Or, your business might “re-do” or provide another (perhaps free of charge or discounted) service that will encourage the customer to update their negative review to a positive one.
Pro-tip: Never make your customers feel pressured to change their reviews or remove feedback. Make sure the tone is friendly and not coercive. Customers should not feel incentivized or threatened to change their reviews. Depending on the review platform, the strategy and approach your business chooses to take may differ.

How do I stop a buyer from leaving negative feedback?
2. Change eBay feedback through eBay intervention – Not all feedback buyers leave on your profile is considered valid. When it isn’t, it may be removed. There are situations that call for intervention from eBay, such as when there is no response from the buyer, you can’t agree on a solution to address the problem or the feedback reveals personal information.
In these instances, you should report the feedback to eBay and leave them to judge and remove it. Sellers must make a request for a manual review within 90 days of the transaction. It’s important not to let negative feedback go without comment on your part, because this means you agree with what’s been posted.
It’s best to leave an apologetic note if you made a genuine mistake and an explanatory one if you think there was a buyer error. Feedback reported to eBay will be removed in the following instances:
- You couldn’t contact the buyer because the email address provided was wrong.
- The buyer left negative feedback but the item is still unpaid.
There are three situations in which eBay automatically removes feedback:
- When the feedback was the direct result of a program error, website issue or systemic delay in communication or shipping.
- When the buyer has been suspended by eBay, in which case feedback left within 90 days of the suspension will be automatically removed. (Manual removal via the feedback Revision Process page is necessary past 90 days.)
- When a comment is in clear violation of eBay policy, such as when it contains links to another website or seller or uses obscene, racist or profane/vulgar language. However, in these instances, the feedback rating will not necessarily be removed.
It’s important because the seller rating will affect your visibility in eBays search results. Also, customers are more likely to buy from a seller with lots of positive feedback! Effect of negative feedback on eBay’s search rankings: eBay has an algorithm called Best Match.
- Create accurate listings
- Use high quality images
- Pick the right category for your product
- Increase your seller volume
- Offer competitive shipping
- Provide great customer service
- And most importantly, maintain a positive selling history
However, if you have a lot of negative feedback then this can affect your chances of showing in the search results. Meaning, fewer sales. If you and the buyer have agreed to change the feedback you received, here’s a step-by-step guide to changing neutral and negative feedback.
- Click on My eBay at the top right corner and click on the Account tab. In the “My Account” column on the left, click on “Feedback.”
- Click on the “Request Feedback Revision” link under “Recent Feedback.” Alternately, you can click on the “Go to Feedback Forum” link and click “Request Feedback revision” on the right side of the page, under “Feedback tools.”
- Click the feedback you want to request a revision of.
- Under the line “Give the buyer a reason for the request,” state the reason why you’d like to have the feedback revised.
- Once done, click the “Send” button.
- The buyer will receive an email with your request.
- Let the buyer know he or she only has 10 days in which to respond and provide revised feedback. If they do not change their feedback within that time, it will become permanent.
- Don’t forget to thank the buyer for agreeing to your request!
In all cases—whether negative feedback was left by accident or on purpose—respond to it in a calm, professional manner. Even if the buyer didn’t give you the chance to resolve the issue and rectify the situation, keep a level head and respond with class.
- Click on “My eBay” at the top right corner and click on the Account tab. In the “My Account” column on the left, click on “Feedback.”
- Click on the “Go to Feedback Forum” link and click “Reply to Feedback Received” on the right side of the page, under “Feedback Tools.”
- Find the comment to which you would like to leave a response, then click “Reply.”
- Write your response. Make sure to provide a clear and factual explanation of the situation and why you are disputing or disagreeing with the negative feedback.
- Click “Leave Reply.”
Monitor the feedback thread until the buyer responds. Depending on how things go, the buyer may agree to change the feedback. If they do not and the Feedback remains in your profile, take comfort in the fact that the feedback comment thread can show future buyers that you did your part as a responsible seller and that the buyer left the negative feedback unfairly.
Remember to avoid responding to a negative feedback comment when you’re upset. Wait a day or two, and strive to keep the tone of your comment professional—that way, others who see it won’t think of you as a total monster (and the buyer will probably come across as whiny or simply unfair). If the buyer refuses to change the unfair feedback, you can contact eBay customer service and ask them to intervene.
Take note that eBay will only remove feedback “in certain exceptional cases,” such as violations of the profanity policy. It’s best to contact eBay directly to request a manual review and/or open a case in the eBay Resolution Center, Customer Service will review the information you provide and get back to you within 48 hours.
- You can also call eBay’s toll-free customer support number: 866-540-3229.
- Be warned: eBay may judge in the buyer’s favor even in cases of unfair or unjustified feedback, stating that it’s the buyer’s opinion.
- The lowest feedback score on eBay is 1 star.
