Families feel the same way when you reply to their jobs. Don’t copy and paste the same generic message to all families. Your response to a job post is essentially your babysitter or nanny cover letter. Personalize and customize it for this specific position. Say why you’re a good fit for what they need, and provide unique details that illustrate who you are and why they would be lucky to have you. - Be Punctual Respond to messages when you say you will. When you first filled out your profile, you said you would respond to a message in two days, one day, etc. If you aren’t doing that, or if you aren’t responding to messages at all, it will say so on your profile. Families feel more comfortable reaching out to someone who responds to 95 percent of messages than someone who responds to only 59 percent. Just like in school, good grades matter. Need to update your response time? In your profile, go to “Account and Settings,” scroll down to the third gray section called “My Services” and click “Edit Profile”. Under “Availability,” choose how many days it will take you to respond to a message. Then hit “Save and Finish.” And stick to it!
- Be Knowledgeable Care.com has a whole library of resources! From what to discuss during an interview to how to handle background checks, we provide you with as much information as possible. Many people ask questions on our Facebook page and in the comment sections at the end of articles. Most of the time, we already have the answer in an article. They might not have posted a job yet, but you can still proactively reach out to people in your area who have expressed an interest in things like finding a pet sitter, Briefly introduce yourself and what you have to offer, just in case they may be looking for someone who fits your experience in the future. You’ll plant the seed early, and if they ever do need help, you’ll come to mind first.
- Be Active Ever heard the saying “looking for a job is a full-time job”? What does that mean on Care.com? Log in daily. Respond to a job, comment on an article, add references, etc. The more active you are, the higher your profile appears in search results. And no one wants to hire someone who last checked their account three weeks ago. That would worry a family, especially if they need someone ASAP. By logging in daily, you show you’re serious about finding a job. Hundreds of babysitters are also looking for a job. If you aren’t participating and searching daily, that perfect job is going to be snatched up before you log back onto the site!
- Be Appropriate Competition is stiff, but don’t lower your standards just to grab a job. You shouldn’t charge (and families shouldn’t feel comfortable offering) two dollars an hour to watch four kids. That’s not fair to you or the children. You are caring for a child’s safety, providing educational activities and acting as a parent while the parents aren’t available. Care.com has a disclaimer that families must pay at least the minimum wage (which differs greatly from state to state). Most families will pay an appropriate rate for a sitter or a nanny if that person has everything they’re looking for. Talk with the family about a pay rate that you’re both comfortable with, but if they offer an unreasonable salary, it’s probably not a family you want to work for anyway.
- Be Seasonal Changes in seasons mean changes in a family’s needs, and we see this often at Care.com. More families need help in the summer when school is out. If you have lifeguard training, tweak your profile in the summer to highlight that skill. If it’s winter, talk about your love for skiing and how you would be comfortable going with families to the nearby slopes. It’s a good idea to search for jobs on Care.com all year round. And it’s best to start looking for jobs early. Once summer hits, all of the college caregivers and those who are only looking for seasonal jobs sign up on the site and the competition becomes that much stiffer.
- Be Complete Fill out a profile that may be a bit barren. Talk about not only your favorite movies, but also your favorite movies to watch with kids. Maybe reminisce about your days as a soccer star or a ballerina, and you’ll appeal to families who are involved with those activities. Check out your profile strength. In the right-hand corner of your “My Care.com” tab, where you log in, there’s a square that says “My Profile Strength.” (Luckily, only you can see it, not other people looking at your profile.) If it says 80 percent complete, get your bar all the way to the finish line. Make sure your profile features these must-have items:
- Background check. Does your profile say you have a background check “available on request”? This shows you’re serious about being hired and have no skeletons in your closet. Plus, you’ll appear higher on the search results page and get more exposure.

- Certification. Are you trained in CPR? First aid? Nursing? Lifeguarding? Dog training? You’re being hired to care for a family’s kids, seniors, pets and home. Care.Com Memberships – Care.com offers two options for family memberships and two options for caregivers. For families looking to hire, you can opt for basic membership, which is free. With free membership you can post a job ad, search for people in your area and use the resources.
- If you would like to respond to candidates or employers that reach out to you, you will need to pay for their premium membership, which basically makes everyone get a paid membership.
- Family Premium Membership costs between $12.99 – $38.99 a month.
- If you’re a caregiver you technically can have a free membership, but that way you can only respond to premium family accounts.
The Caregiver premium membership costs $20/month for one month, $15/month for three months, and $10/month for six months and you get a priority in search and can respond to anyone’s messages. Care.com auto-renews your memberships without notifying you, so you need to make sure to cancel it if you’re done using it.
Can you respond to a review on care com?
What should you do if you get a negative review? – Although reviews are usually a great thing, negative reviews are tricky to handle. The only person who can remove a negative review from your profile is the person who posted it — not you or even our member care team.
If you get a review you’re less than pleased with, respond to it right on your profile. But the trick is to do so professionally and nicely. Answering back with a poorly worded rant that complains about the family or situation will only put off potential clients reading your page. Instead, write a short comment that replies to the issues addressed in the review.
For example, if a parent says you were late to a babysitting job, apologize, provide a good excuse, promise that it will never happen again and offer to make it up to the family. And make sure to spell check, write in full sentences and use proper grammar.
Can I message for free on care com?
You can sign up for a basic account on Care.com and use the site for free. However, the basic account only gives you access to certain features, and doesn’t allow you to easily communicate through the online messaging system. To get more features, you need to purchase a paid membership subscription.

But seriously, if someone wants to talk to you on the phone they’ll call you. If you call in response to a text you can expect one of two things: either a phone call with a person who is frustrated by your lack of social skills or an ignored phone call and the awkward text conversation that will follow it.2.
- The Rule of Response : Always respond, unless you don’t want to be friends with that person anymore.
- Yes, we are all busy people, and I know it’s sometimes hard to respond when you know it will probably end up as a full on text conversation, but you should always respond.
- That is, of course, if you want to stay friends with the person.
If not, feel free to ignore them. Handy Tip : Keep your messages marked as new in case you aren’t responding right away. That way you can keep track of the people that are in need of a response. Which leads me to the next rule 3. The Two Day Rule : If it takes you two days to get back to me, I technically have two days to get back to you.
- There is no room to get upset at someone for not responding to you in a timely fashion when you don’t respond to them quickly either.
- With that being said, there is also the other side of the coin 4.
- The Too Quick Rule : If it takes me two days to respond to you, don’t respond immediately.
- This rule is particularly pertinent in dating situations.
It makes you seem really desperate, which reminds me of the next rule 5. The 2 Text Rule : If you text someone two times and they don’t respond, they don’t want to talk to you. So stop texting them. Immediately. An old roommate of mine had some great wisdom about relationships when he told me “there’s always one person in a relationship that likes the other person less, and you never want to be the person who is liked less.” If you continue to text them after no responses, you’re the person who is liked less.
Sometimes you’re just not sure about someone though, so this next one happens 6. The Don’t Leave Me Hanging Rule : Don’t text first if you’re not willing to continue the conversation. IE: (You) Hey! How are you? (Them) I’m well. Yourself? (You), What’s Going On : usually these texts are sent late at night or after someone gets dumped.
They say: “I kind of think you’re ok, but I’m really just trying to boost my ego by knowing that you’ll respond.” They probably know this because you’ve broke The 2 Text Rule in the past.7. The Rule of Dismissal : Don’t ignore a call and then text a person.
Give them some time to think that you missed their call instead of them knowing that you ignored it. Really, it’s just the right thing to do.8. The Rule of Disproportionate Letters : This one applies to messages received from a woman: never respond to a three page text with “k.” At least give her a full “ok.” If you’re a guy and you get a three page text from another guy, it’s completely acceptable to delete them from both Facebook and your life.
Ain’t nobody got time for that! 9. THE IRONIC RULE : DON’T TEXT IN ALL CAPS: IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE ANGRY !! (It’s ironic because the title of the rule is written all in caps. See what we did there?) 10. The L O L Rule : Don’t use “lol” more than you have to. We’re also helping you to understand the “Ha Scale.” You can tell just how funny people think you are by paying attention to how many ha’s they use in a text message. Here we go.
1 Ha – This is basically an acknowledgement that you were attempting a joke. Nothing more, nothing less. Example : “Hayou’re funny.” Translation : No, you’re not. 2 Ha’s – Nice work. If you were talking to the person in real life, they would have let out a hearty chuckle. Example : “Hahathat’s hilarious.” Translation : It’s not hilarious, but you’re getting closer. 3 or more Ha’s – You’re actually really funny. In person, that would have elicited a full-on laugh. That is, of course, if you would have been able to be just as witty without having the time to think of a response like you do when you’re texting. Example : “HahahahI’m dying!” Translation : Again, they’re not dying, but they probably laughed out loud. Although they didn’t use “lol” which is good, since they would have broken rule #10.
